What Is the Working Principle of Industrial Pressure Blowers

May 27, 2025

Industrial pressure blowers operate based on the principle of fluid mechanics to move air or gas and generate pressure.

Centrifugal Blowers

Centrifugal pressure blowers are among the most common. They consist of an impeller that rotates within a housing. As the impeller spins, usually driven by an electric motor, air is drawn in through the center of the impeller. The rotating impeller imparts kinetic energy to the air. The blades of the impeller accelerate the air radially outward.

As the air moves from the center to the periphery of the impeller, its velocity increases. When the high-velocity air then enters the volute-shaped housing, the design of the housing slows down the air. This conversion from kinetic energy to pressure energy results in an increase in static pressure. The air is then pushed out through the outlet of the blower at a higher pressure than it entered, enabling it to perform tasks such as supplying air to a pneumatic system or providing ventilation in a building.

Positive Displacement Blowers

Positive - displacement blowers work differently. They use mechanisms such as lobes or screws. For example, in a lobe-type blower, two counter-rotating lobes trap a volume of air between them. As the lobes rotate, the trapped air is moved from the inlet side to the outlet side. This displacement of air creates a positive pressure at the outlet. These blowers are often used in applications where a relatively constant flow rate and high-pressure output are required, such as in some industrial drying processes.
